1952  Institute of Geophysics and Geomatics (IGG),with its predecessor of Department of Geophysical Prospecting, Beijing College of Geology (BCG), is one of the four first build departments at the establishment of the China University of Geosciences (CUG).

1954   Exploration geophysics was granted the doctor's degree authorization.

2000  "Engineering geophysics" key open research laboratory of the Ministry of Land and Resources was approved.

2001  Doctor's degree authorization in Solid Geophysics was approved.

2003  renamed as Institute of Geophysics & Geomatics( IGG).

2006 "Geophysics" first-level discipline doctoral degree authorization and post-doctoral mobile station were approved. "Geophysical Prospecting and Information Technology" was rated as a national key discipline, which belongs to a national first-level key discipline "Geological Resources and Geological Engineering".

2008  “Geophysics” major was approved national characteristic major.

2017 The “Geophysics” major ranked fourth in the discipline evaluation and the discipline “Geological Resources and Geological Engineering” ranked first in the country.

2019  “Geophysics” and “Prospecting technology and Engineering” were Selected as the first-class discipline construction site.
